Geography of Portugal

Portugal is a coastal nation in south-western Europe, located at the western end of the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain ( on its northern and eastern frontiers: a total of 1,214 km (754 mi )).

Portuguese territory also includes a series of archipelagos in the Atlantic Ocean ( the Azores and Madeira ), which are strategic islands along western sea approaches to the Strait of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea.

Controversies between Portugal and Spain

Despite these definitions, Portugal's border with Spain remains an unresolved territorial dispute between the two countries.
Portugal does not recognize the border between Caia and Cuncos River deltas, since the beginning of the 1801 by the occupation of Olivenza by Spain.
This territory, Olivenza though under the Spanish occupation, is to Portugal a dispute, consequently no border is recognized in this area.

Location ---  Portugal is located on the Atlantic coast of this plateau, and crossed by several rivers which have their origin in Spain. Most of these rivers flow from east to west disgorging in the Atlantic; from north to south, the primary rivers are the Minho, Douro, Tagus ( Tejo ) and the Guadiana.

Size --- The continental shelf has an area of 28,000 km2 (11,000 sq mi), although its width is variable from 150 km in the north to 25 km in the south.

Sea / Ocean --- Its strong relief is marked by deep submarine canyons and the continuation of the main rivers, Portuguese government claims plus 200 Nautical Miles of exploitation, As a result of its maritime possessions and coastline, Portugal has the Third Largest Exclusive Economic Zone of the European Union countries (and eleventh in the world ).

Lakes --- No large natural lakes exist in Continental Portugal, where the largest inland water surfaces are dam-originated reservoirs, ( such as the Alqueva reservoir with 250 km2, the largest in Europe ).

Terrain --- Mountainous and hilly north of the Tagus River, rolling plains in south

Natural Resources --- Fish, forests ( cork ), tungsten, iron ore, uranium ore, marble, arable land, hydroelectric power.

Can prices change?

The prices on this website were calculated based on the tariffs and exchange rates in force at the time. Any change in exchange rates or fuel costs, port fees, airport fees, fuel, as well as transport costs of any nature, may be subject to adjustment.

What are the rules for transporting liquids?

 You are only allowed to carry small amounts of liquids in your hand luggage. These liquids must be in individual packaging with a maximum capacity of 100 ml each. These packages must be placed in a transparent plastic bag, with a hermetic seal, with a maximum capacity of one liter per passenger.

What are the rules at the airport at the moment?

To facilitate the detection of liquids, you must:

What documentation do I need to travel?

Minors, when traveling unaccompanied by their parents, or their representatives, must present authorization from their parents or the absentee, an authorization that requires notarization, mentioning the name and number of the respective identification document of the person responsible for the minor during the trip. The person traveling must obtain the necessary documentation to undertake the trip, including a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity after the date of visiting the last country on the itinerary, respective visas when necessary and comply with the health formalities in force in the countries to visit. Citizens of other countries must verify the need for a visa at their respective consulates or embassies.

I will travel with a minor. What should I do?

National legislation, more precisely article 23 of D.L. 138/2006, of 26 July, stipulates that national minors, when not accompanied by someone exercising parental authority, can only leave national territory by displaying an authorization for that purpose. . In both cases, this authorization must be contained in a written document, dated and with the legally certified signature of the person exercising parental authority, also granting powers of monitoring by duly identified third parties.

What health care should I take into account?

Depending on the destination, it is advisable to take medication for any pain or fever, allergies or insect bites, among others.

If you take a specific medication, make sure you take enough of it, as it may not be available where you are visiting. If you need to purchase it on your trip, take the prescription and the part of the packaging that identifies the active substance, to facilitate substitution when the brand you use is not available. It is recommended that you have a prescription from your doctor in legible writing to legally prove that you need the medicine.

 Vaccines
